What is Mentha ?
All are familiar with the Mentha(mint), its smell and its appearance. Its name is derived from Greek word and Latin word. Peppermint is grows best in moist soil.
Today, Peppermint is cultivated in all temparate climate zones.
The Mentha species is cultivated in various parts of world. It is grown in Europe, Japan, France, England, Italy, USA, Bulgaria and some parts of India. Mentha[Pudina] is grown on an altitude of 250,400 m. Peppermint oil is extracted from Mentha, which is used in various industries.
Mentha is propagated by sucker. The branches are square and erect. Leaf color ranges form dark green, pale green, grey green to purple, blue, etc.
100 kg of oil is extracted per hectare of crop per year. The peppermint oil is mostly used in cosmetic, food and pharmaceutical industries. In India 500 tonnes menthol is annualy produced.
After 3 years of cultivation, the active ingredients present in it decreases. Hence the plant is replace with new cutting.
