What is Hibiscus ?

Hibiscus is a bushy, evergreen shrub or small tree with glossy leaves and solitary, brilliant red flowers in summer and autumn. The 5 petaled flowers, with prominent orange-tipped red anthers.

It is generally grows in warm temperate, subtropical and tropical regions. Hibiscus plant cannot tolerate temperatures below 10 °C.


Hibiscus leaves and flowers are used to make tea and other liquid extract to treat the disease conditions.

Benefits of Hibiscus

  • In African countries, tea of hibiscus flower and leaves are used to treat constipation, cancer, cold symptoms and liver disease.

  • Hibiscus is popular in world for its potential to reduce high blood pressure. it is still a common treatment for high blood pressure.

  •  Paste made from the leaves of hibiscus is applied on the wounds to heal it.

  • Recent studies shows that hibiscus extract may have effect on metabolism, preventing obesity and increase of fat in the liver

 

Uses :

1] The flowers of Hibiscus rosa-sinensis are edible and are used in salads in the pacific island.
 

2] The flower is additionally used in hair care as a preparation.  It is also used to shine shoes in various parts of India

 3] The flower turns acidic solutions to a dark pink or magenta color and basic solutions to green, hence It is used as pH indicator.
 

4] It is a common flower which is offered to ganesha in indian culture.

 5]  In many countries the flowers are dried and used in a beverage, mostly tea.


 6] The flowers are used in various parts of China to color various intoxicating liquors. The plant may have some potential effect on skin problems


Drawbacks:

Over use of hibiscus capsules, tinctures, and powder may cause

1]  stomach pain,

 

2]  gas, constipation,

 

3]  nausea,

 

4]  painful urination,

 

5]  headache, and

 

6]  ringing in the ears.

Overconsumption of hibiscus tea may cause

1]  transient dizziness and

 

2]  fatigue due to its effect on blood pressure.

When taken with antihypertensive drugs cause hypotension (low blood pressure).
