Is sperm whales vomit is costlier than gold !!!

Ambergris is the vomit of sperm whale but some says it is fecal matter of sperm whale. They are found in all deep oceans, from the equator to the edge of the pack ice in the Arctic and Antarctic. They are named after the waxy substance, spermaceti, found in their heads.

Sperm Whale

The sperm whale is the largest of the toothed whales and the largest toothed predator in the world. The sperm whale’s very large brain and specialized sonar organ contribute to its characteristic block-shaped head. 

Due to its head shape it is quite easy to identify. Sperm whales are known for their large heads which is of one-third of their body length. The Sperm whales live for up to 60 years.

Ambergris

Before it is converting to the ambergris it has fecal and marine odour.  The value of ambergris lies in its role in the fragrance or perfume industry. Ambergris is used to fix the scent to human skin for long time.

Ambergris is found in lumps of various sizes and shapes, usually weighing from 15 to 50 kg. or sometimes more.

Ambergris has been highly valued by perfumers as a fixative that allows the scent to endure much longer but due to its high cost it has been mostly replaced by synthetic ambroxide.

Dogs are used by ambergris searchers to find ambergris because dogs is attracted towards the ambergris.

By floating the raw ambergris for months to years in ocean it is converted into usefull ambergris by the method of photodegradation and oxidation, this precursor gradually hardens, developing a dark grey or black colour, a crusty and waxy texture, and a peculiar odour that is at once sweet, earthy, marine, and animal

Scientist calls it as a floating gold due to its high cost i.e.  According to latest reports ambergris could be worth US$71,000 for a 1.57kg lump.

It got its name because it looks like the amber washed up on beaches in the Baltic and Gris comes from the Latin word for grey.
